Stanford Report (1)

Aerosol pollution slows winds, reduces rainfall [link]
Global effort to provide poorest with basic sanitation slow going [link]
Mobile communication devices may be pocket-size persuaders in next 10 years [link]
Cellulosic ethanol: Fuel of the future? [link]

"The ideal plant for producing cellulosic ethanol, he added, is Miscanthus, a perennial grass native to subtropical and tropical regions of Africa and southern Asia, which is used as an ornamental plant in the United States."

"There are many species of algae that accumulate oil in their cells in quite large amounts. In the laboratory they can be grown in quiet a large scale and are quite efficient producers of biofuels. (...)The problem with algae is where you’re going to grow them: if you grow them in a pound, in general what happens is that wild algae, that don’t make anything useful, compete with the cultivated algae. (...)And if you try putting them in a container, so that you can keep it clean, the problem is that the cost of building the container is too high. (...) There are many species in the sea, so if you take species that are useful to us and put them there, it won’t be long before it’s overtaken and we can’t control, contain them. So it may be nice to be able to use the oceans, but I’m pretty skeptical about it. We have to be somewhat careful about upsetting the ecology of the ocean. (...) I don’t think it would be an attractive thing to the ocean, all the organism that live there would have their ecologies seriously upset by this huge amount of biomass."
